SNK 40th Anniversary Collection

Nintendo Switch Ι Genre: Historically relevant compilation

Established in Osaka on July 1978, the Shin Nihon Kikaku (新日本企画/New Japanese Project) company is one of the most important developers of the global game industry. Founded by Eikichi Kawasaki, SNK initially produced software and hardware components for other companies, but noticing the ultra-fast growing popularity of coin-op; especially Space Invaders who caused a shortage of 100-yen coins in whole Japan; he decided to rush headlong into this newborn technology.

The activity in the video games’ field started in 1979 when SNK released Ozma Wars; a shoot’em inspired by Taito’s Space Invaders. What made this game a milestone is that this is the very first game which includes the concept of “levels”. But it’s only in 1981 with the release of Vanguard that the popularity of this company increased enormously. Ported on Atari 2600 in 1982; this shoot’em up has been hailed as a truly marvelous home-arcade translation of the original coin-op. In addition, it won the “1984 Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Videogame” during the 5th annual Arkie Awards, where judges described it as “a scrolling shootout extravaganza” and highlighted its outstanding art style.

Riding the wave of success, during the next decade, SNK released many other hits, who are still lovely remembered as some of the best games of that era. Titles like Alpha Mission, Athena, and above all Ikari Warriors touched the lives of millions of players who inserted thousands of quarter-bags in order to have the greatest gameplay experiences of the 80s!
But an innovative company like SNK is always on the lookout for new challenges; this is why in 1989, it released a new kind of arcade machine. Based on the idea to pack many games in a single cabinet, and presenting four new titles at once (NAM-1975, Baseball Stars Professional, Top Player’s Golf, and Magician Lord) SNK gave birth to the legendary Neo-Geo Multi-Video System.

Thanks to its state-of-the-art graphics, astonishing music, and exceptional gameplay; those firsts games got immediate success. And, two years later the wildest dream of millions of people to have a proper arcade system at home has been granted; with the release of the Neo-Geo Advanced Entertainment System. It allowed to have the same experiences of coin-ops in the living rooms using bigger, badder, and better cartridges!
The rest is history…
