From the Yamaha Sound Technology Development Center to the World… today we’re here to celebrate the 15 birthday of the one and only VOCAL android superstar… the legendary Hatsune Miku!
Began as common software for music composers distributed by Crypton Future Media; this program used the voice of Saki Fujita to add the unique feature of the recreation of a virtual human voice, hugely similar to reality.
The Hatsune Miku phenomenon started when on the Japanese sharing video platform Nico Nico Douga appeared with the firsts songs that used this particular voice; upload after upload a lot of people create their own compositions, and all of them gave an incredible boost to what we now call “Nth Fanfiction” that denotes the endless opportunities for everyone to create and reproduce his/her original music works. Songwriters, illustrators, programmers, and an insanely big number of fans cooperated day by day creating a community that used their songs and videos to share with others many messages and values in a constantly increasing collaborative environment where each person can leave a mark.
Over the years, what started as a niche movement in the cyber world grew more and more to become a pop-cultural phenomenon on a global scale; music albums, video games, apparel, and live shows made Hatsune Miku an actual superstar that brings the fantasy and the virtuality of the cyber world into the real world.
Outside the window is a monochrome world!
Decomposing the human voice into binary code, and reassembling it into vocals; Crypton & Sega worked hard to expand Hatsune Miku’s horizons turning a mere “it” (the music software) into a “she” with a specific body, look, and character. Like a contemporary (and real) version of Rei Toei – one of the main characters of William Gibson’s 1995 novel Idoru – even if we’re in front of the stage to see her 3D hologram or in front of the TV to play with one of her videogames; Hatsune Miku carries us into a sort of hyperreal cyberpunk universe where the nonorganic artifice is portrayed as an organic life form in which fans can easily identify.
With the materialization of virtuality, Miku-chan expresses perfectly the revolution of the younger generations – not only in Japan but among the whole planet – in redefining the traditional forms of entertainment from a physical form to a digital form. Create new cyber music, go to see holographic concerts, share new videos on the web, and everything in between.
Miku, you’re not one year older, you’re one year better!
In any case, because we’re living in a material world; we can count on a huge number of physical goods to celebrate Hatsune Miku’s birthday in the greatest way, and at the same time show everyone how good and beautiful she is. Thanks to glamorously sparkling, colorful, and truly cool t-shirts, music albums, toys, otamatone, plushes, and much more… get ready to tell the world that August 31st is a very important day for our beloved cyber-diva. Miku-chan is here to give all of us the greatest virtual experience ever seen both in physical and virtual worlds.
So, enough to chitchat, it’s time to sing loudly…
